Trebinje is Bosnia and Herzegovina’s sun-drenched southern gateway, draped in vineyards and flanked by two borders. Buses to Dubrovnik crawl through checkpoints and vanish after dusk, while local taxis charge coastal prices for cross-border hops. With car hire Trebinje you unlock dawn selfies at Arslanagić Bridge, lazy zig-zags through the Popovo Polje wine route and sunset oysters in Mali Ston – all in a single, border-hassle-free day. Diesel costs 15 % less than over the Croatian line, street parking is free after 17 : 00 and unlimited mileage lets you pair Herzegovinian monasteries with Montenegrin fjords in one loop. Above all, a self-drive frees you to detour: a riverside kafana where the menu isn’t translated, a cliff-top monastery whose bells echo into three countries, or a sleepy beach you’ll have to yourself. Freedom tastes better with locally bottled Žilavka chilled in your boot.

  • Tvrdos Monastery Wine Stop – 12 min / 5 km
    • Taste 15th-century cellars, buy Cabernet for €6, picnic by the Trebišnjica riverbank.
  • Hercegovačka Gračanica – 15 min / 6 km
    • Climb to the hilltop church for panoramic city shots, free parking at the summit café.
  • Vjetrenica Cave – 45 min / 32 km
    • Europe’s largest karst cave maze; cool 11 °C – pack a jumper.

  • Perast & Our Lady of the Rocks – 55 min / 48 km
    • Glide through Montenegro’s Verige Strait to postcard harbours.

  • Zone A meters accept coins only – nearest ATM is Poste Srpske on Njegoševa.

  • Cheapest 24 h garage – Market Centar underground, €3/day when ticketed before 09 : 00.

  • Free overnight bays – Park on the left bank promenade after 17 : 00; ignore morning market cones on Sundays.

  • Local tip – INA station on M20 usually undercuts motorway pumps by €0.04 L; top up before crossing to Croatia.

  • Returning late – Energopetrol on Industrijska bb is 800 m from our key locker and stays open 24/7.
  • Spring – April & May 22 °C highs; wild-flower carpets in Popovo Polje; uncrowded wineries.

  • Summer – June to August Daily craft-beer nights under plane-trees; book a car with strong A/C and reserve three weeks ahead.

  • Autumn – September & October Harvest festivals; golden vineyards; paragliding above Bileća Lake.

  • Winter – November to March Day-trip to ski resorts on Orjen or sneak cheap oysters in Ston; winter tyres fitted free.

Take M20 north to Gacko then R435 east along Sutjeska National Park for a four-hour alpine epic to Sarajevo – watch for roaming sheep near Tjentište. For Montenegro, head south-east: Ilino Brdo crossing to Nikšić, then E762 to Podgorica (1 h 45 min). Border waits outside July weekends rarely top ten minutes. Select the Cross-Border Permit during booking – a green card and Montenegrin eco-tax receipt wait in your glovebox. Montenegrin tolls are cash-only (€2 each way at Trebešić tunnel), headlights on 24 h and reflective vests must be reachable (ours sit in the boot net).

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you deliver the car to my hotel?

Yes. Choose **“Hotel delivery”** at checkout, pick a 30-minute slot and type your accommodation name. Our agent scans your documents on a tablet, signs the digital contract and photographs the car with you in 5 minutes. Delivery is **free within 5 km of the Stone Bridge**; beyond that we charge €0.70 per extra kilometre. We can also collect the vehicle from your hotel when your trip ends.

Is a credit card mandatory?

Most suppliers block €300–€600 on a credit card, but some partners accept cash deposits. Tick **“Cash deposit allowed”** in the filter and the system will surface those options instantly.

Do I need an International Driving Permit?

EU, UK, US, CA, AU, NZ and Swiss licences in Roman script need no IDP. Drivers with Cyrillic-only or other non-Roman licences must carry an IDP by law; without it we cannot release the vehicle.

Can I pick up in Trebinje and drop off in Dubrovnik?

Absolutely. Select **“Return to a different location”** and pick Dubrovnik. One-way fees start at €29; they cover green card, Croatian road tax and our partner’s handling. Nothing extra is charged at the desk.

Where can I park overnight in the Old Town?

Zone B bays on Kralja Petra Street are free 17 : 00–07 : 00. For guarded 24 h parking use Market Centar garage (entrance on Vojvode Stepe) – €3/day, card payments accepted, toilets and CCTV.

Are border fees included?

If you add **Cross-Border Permit** at checkout, yes – paperwork is prepaid. Skip it and the desk will charge €20 for a last-minute green card.
