Trebinje is Bosnia and Herzegovina’s sun-drenched southern gateway, draped in vineyards and flanked by two borders. Buses to Dubrovnik crawl through checkpoints and vanish after dusk, while local taxis charge coastal prices for cross-border hops. With car hire Trebinje you unlock dawn selfies at Arslanagić Bridge, lazy zig-zags through the Popovo Polje wine route and sunset oysters in Mali Ston – all in a single, border-hassle-free day. Diesel costs 15 % less than over the Croatian line, street parking is free after 17 : 00 and unlimited mileage lets you pair Herzegovinian monasteries with Montenegrin fjords in one loop. Above all, a self-drive frees you to detour: a riverside kafana where the menu isn’t translated, a cliff-top monastery whose bells echo into three countries, or a sleepy beach you’ll have to yourself. Freedom tastes better with locally bottled Žilavka chilled in your boot.
Take M20 north to Gacko then R435 east along Sutjeska National Park for a four-hour alpine epic to Sarajevo – watch for roaming sheep near Tjentište. For Montenegro, head south-east: Ilino Brdo crossing to Nikšić, then E762 to Podgorica (1 h 45 min). Border waits outside July weekends rarely top ten minutes. Select the Cross-Border Permit during booking – a green card and Montenegrin eco-tax receipt wait in your glovebox. Montenegrin tolls are cash-only (€2 each way at Trebešić tunnel), headlights on 24 h and reflective vests must be reachable (ours sit in the boot net).
